I am also replaying the 1990 Detroit Tigers (79-83) using Strat-o-Matic baseball. It's the year that Cecil Fielder slugged 51 home runs.
Come back here for updates on the 1990 Tigers (no bells and whistles---just game results, Fielder's stats, and a quote from manager Sparky Anderson following every game)
Thru July 27, 1990:
Record: 50-51 (actual 48-53); 4th place, -4 games (Toronto)
Last 10: 5-5; Streak: W-2
Fielder: 358 AB; 113 H; .316 BA; 34 HR; 92 RBI
Last game: Friday, July 27 (Boston 6 at Tigers 10)
Highlights: The Boston Red Sox might just be what the Tigers need, after all.
The Red Sox entered their four-game series with the Tigers riding a 10-16 funk. The Tigers had lost eight of 11.
Two games into the series, the Tigers are 2-0 and the Red Sox are still reeling. And they're no longer in first place in the AL East.
The Tigers beat the Red Sox again on Friday, 10-6, knocking Boston a game behind the new leaders, the Toronto Blue Jays.
Rookie Travis Fryman's bases loaded, bases-clearing double capped a five-run second inning---after the Red Sox scored four times in the top of the inning---and that set the tone for the victory.
Tigers starter Jack Morris (10-13) survived a rough start and shut the Red Sox down in the middle innings while his team added to its lead.
The seventh inning featured back-to-back triples from Gary Ward and Chet Lemon.
Cecil Fielder started the Tigers' scoring in the second with his 34th home run of the year.
The Tigers have outscored the Red Sox 18-7 so far in the series.
Sparky Said: "It's nice to score some runs. I know we can smack the ball around better than we have been. That team over there (the Red Sox) is gonna start hitting again, too. I hope it's after they leave town."
